Henry R. Kranzler, M.D.

Henry R. Kranzler, M.D. is the Karl E. Rickels Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Center for Studies of Addiction at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Co-Associate Director for Research for the VISN 4 MIRECC of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). A board-certified psychiatrist, Dr. Kranzler’s research focuses on the genetics, neuroimaging, and treatment of substance use disorders, including pharmacogenetics. His work has been supported since 1987 by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the VA. Dr. Kranzler has conducted more than 20 randomized controlled trials of medications to treat alcohol or drug use disorders, authored more than 700 publications, and served on multiple editorial boards and grant review panels. From 2014-2024 he was editor of Alcohol: Clinical and Experimental Research, the official journal of the Research Society on Alcohol.
